Although the balcony is closed, my favorite movie critic is still on the job, and today he explains where he’s coming from when he reviews movies.
I know that to get a movie made is a small miracle, that the reputations, careers and finances of the participants are on the line, and that hardly anybody sets out to make a bad movie. I do not feel comfortable posing as impossible to please. Film lovers attend different movies for different reasons, all of them valid; did I enjoy “Joe vs. the Volcano” more than some Oscar winners? Certainly.
I think this is the secret to why most people enjoy Ebert’s reviews, and why we’ve come to trust his judgment.
And, by the way, I most certainly enjoyed “Joe v. the Volcano” more than some Oscar winners, and it’s a rare critic that would own up to that.
