The Unapologetic Mexican writes a very nice deconstruction of the movie “Falling Down”, which I think hits the nail on the head, and explains better than I could why I didn’t have the least inclination to see that movie. At the time the movie came out, I had a suspicion that it was really about celebrating the poor, downtrodden, Average White Male, who is being squeezed out of existence by women, latinos, blacks, asians, and other minorities. Nothing could be further from the truth, of course, but the AWM’s sense of martyrdom and outrage is fed by movies like this.
What I especially like about his piece is that he shows how the images in the movie are manipulating the audience. This is something that I think most movie-goers, or indeed, any visual medium audiences, don’t realize.
